Banking, loans and insurance in Yukon

Yukon has no territorial sales tax and no credit union deposit insurance system of its own, so most residents bank with CDIC-member institutions. Car insurance is private, and residents may claim the federal northern residents deductions.

Deposit protection

Deposits at banks and federally regulated institutions are covered by CDIC up to CAD 100,000 per eligible category. Confirm membership on the CDIC site before opening an account.

Auto insurance

Auto insurance is mandatory and sold by private insurers. Superintendent of Insurance oversight sits with the Yukon government.

Sales and income tax

You pay only the 5% GST, with no territorial sales tax. Yukon has no land transfer tax; Land Titles charges registration fees. Residents may qualify for the northern residents deductions on their federal return.
